Ask anyone who has organized a golf trip to the desert and they will tell you the golf is the easy part. Tee times get booked, carts get assigned, and the course does the rest. Food is where it falls apart. Eight guys, three rounds, one rental kitchen, and every night somebody asks “so where are we eating?” at 6:45 pm.

This is a food plan for a Palm Springs or Coachella Valley golf trip, written by a private chef who cooks for these groups. Use the parts that fit. If you’d rather hand the whole thing off, see our golf trip private chef page.

Plan meals around tee times, not restaurants

An 18-hole round for a foursome runs about four and a half to five hours, longer on a packed Saturday in February. Add the drive and a 7:30 tee time puts you back at the house around 1 pm, hungry and sunburned. A 7:30 pm dinner reservation then means everyone showers, splits into cars or rides, and drives again.

The groups that eat well flip it. Breakfast and lunch happen at the house, the cooler goes on the cart, and only the big dinner leaves the rental, if it leaves at all.

A sample three-day golf trip food plan

Day Morning After the round Night
Arrival Travel, grocery run Range session, sandwiches Easy dinner: grill burgers or order in
Day 1 Eggs, potatoes, coffee by 6:30 Lunch at the house by the pool The big night: chef dinner at the rental
Day 2 Breakfast burritos to go Leftovers, salads, cold drinks Restaurant night or a taco bar at home
Departure Last early round Brunch at the house, then airport Home

One chef night on a three-day trip covers the meal everyone remembers. Three easy ways to set it up: golf and lunch, golf and brunch or golf and dinner. Some groups book a chef every night. Others just want a big brunch waiting after the last round before the flight home.

The cart cooler matters more than you think

Golf season here runs about October to April, and fall and spring afternoons can still get hot. Halfway-house hot dogs and a warm sports drink do nobody any favors on the back nine. Pack the cooler the night before: wraps or sandwiches, cut fruit, salty snacks, and twice the water you think you need. Freeze a few water bottles to double as ice packs.

Check the rental kitchen before you book

Most valley rentals, from La Quinta golf communities to midcentury homes in Palm Springs, have a solid kitchen. A few things are worth asking the host about if you plan to cook or bring in a chef:

  • A working oven and stovetop, and a grill with gas in the tank
  • Enough plates, glasses and chairs for the whole group to sit at once
  • Fridge space, or a second fridge in the garage, which is common here
  • Outdoor dining space with shade or lighting for dinner after sunset

Tournament weeks and big weekends

In January, The American Express brings the PGA Tour to PGA WEST and La Quinta Country Club, and rentals nearby fill fast. Spring golf trips can also overlap the festival weekends in Indio. Book the house, the tee times and the chef at the same time. See private chef for The American Express and our Coachella house guide if your dates collide.

Where to stay for golf

La Quinta and Indian Wells put you closest to PGA WEST, La Quinta Resort, SilverRock and Indian Wells Golf Resort. Palm Desert puts you near Desert Willow. Palm Springs has Indian Canyons and Escena, plus the restaurants and nightlife if half your group would rather not play every day. We cook in all of them: La Quinta, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs. Staying at a members’ club home? See country club private chef.

Golf trip food: quick answers

How long does a round take here?

Plan on four and a half to five hours for 18 with a foursome, longer on busy winter weekends. With the drive back, a 7:30 tee time usually means lunch around 1 pm.

Is a private chef worth it for a golf trip?

For six or more, often yes. You skip reservations, rides and the split bill, and dinner happens on your schedule at the house.

When should we go?

October through April. January to April is peak season, so book tee times, the rental and any chef early.

Want the food handled?

Send your dates, tee times and group size. Chef Tien will plan breakfasts, after-round lunches and dinners around your rounds.
